What to expect: YOUR GUIDE TO
THE EDITING PROCESS

Everything you need to know, from the moment you contact me to the minute you receive your manuscript!

  • Interested in hiring Noumenon Edits? Just reach out using the contact form on this site or email me at: noumenonedits@gmail.com

  • Once you get in touch, we’ll schedule a very relaxed (completely free!) 45-minute discovery call. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to get to know each other, chat about your manuscript, and see if we’re a good fit.

During the call, I’ll ask questions about your manuscript (re: its genre, word count, content warnings, etc), your publishing goals (whether you’re looking to self-publish or trad-publish), and your editing preferences. If you decide to move forward with me, your answers will help me personalise my approach so you get the most out of our collaboration!

*At this stage, you’re also welcome to request an excerpt from a previous editorial letter or book a first chapter assessment (akin to a sample edit) to get a sense of my editing style. For more information, see my FAQs.

  • The next big step is the contract. Before we sign, we’ll discuss all relevant details, including payment plans and editing timelines. At this stage, my aim is to ensure that every part of the process is fully transparent.

Once we’ve both signed, your initial deposit (the exact amount depends on your chosen payment plan) is typically due within five business days. For details on payment plans, please check the section below. As soon as I receive your deposit, your editing spot is officially reserved!

  • Once the agreed-upon start date comes around, I’ll begin work on your manuscript. The editing process looks slightly different depending on the service you’ve selected. Here’s a quick breakdown of the various options:

    • Manuscript Evaluation: I’ll perform a single pass (reading) of your text while taking notes in a separate document. Afterwards, I’ll compile these notes into a concise report that pinpoints your manuscript’s overall strengths and weaknesses, and outlines some recommended next steps.

    • Developmental Edit: I’ll conduct two passes (readings) of your manuscript. During the first pass, I'll take notes on big-picture story elements including plot structure, pacing, dialogue, character development, cast design, worldbuilding, point of view, and more. As I perform the second pass, I’ll refine those notes and add sidebar comments directly onto your manuscript using Microsoft’s track changes feature. Finally, I’ll compile all my insights into an extensive editorial letter highlighting your manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, as well as providing in-depth, actionable feedback.

I’ll keep you in the loop with updates every two weeks and send a friendly reminder three days before your deliverables are ready.

  • Within two weeks of receiving your edit, we’ll schedule a friendly 45-minute follow-up call to clarify the feedback and answer any questions you may have. The goal of this call is to ensure you feel confident moving forward with the revision process.

If, after we’ve spoken, you’d like a little extra support, you’re always welcome to sign up for my monthly coaching service.
